About Pasteis de Nata
Custard tarts with blistered caramelized tops in crisp flaky pastry. Created around 1830 by monks at the Jeronimos Monastery in Belem, who sold them to survive after religious orders were shut down. The original bakery, Pasteis de Belem, still guards the secret recipe. Best eaten warm with cinnamon. Lisbon bakers make them by the thousands every morning.
