About Pizza Margherita
Named after Queen Margherita of Italy, with colors of the Italian flag: red tomatoes, white mozzarella, green basil. Raffaele Esposito created it in Naples. The original had no tomato, as Europeans feared tomatoes were poisonous for 200 years. Over 3 billion pizzas are sold annually in the US alone.
